On a total length of 364 meters photographer Kai Wiedenhöfer is going to show 36 9×3 meter tall panoramas of separation and border walls from eight different regions of the world on the backside of the famous East Side Gallery near river Spree. Since 2006 Wiedenhöfer took pictures at eight different regions: in Baghdad, between North and South Korea, on Cyprus, between the USA and Mexico, between Spain and Morocco, around the Palestine areas, in Belfast, and at the former German-German border.

Since 2008 Wiedenhöfer fought a battle to get permission from Berlin administration for his project “WALL ON WALL”. Finally, in February 2013 – and with the help of former culture senator Adrienne Göhler – lights were set to green. A first test glueing was succesful, for a short time the US-American-Mexican border was visible on Berlin Wall. From July 10th the whole series will be on display on the Westside of the Eastside Gallery, next to the Spree opening of O2 World, Mühlenstr., Berlin Friedrichshain . A preview of the project is part of the professional week of the festival and can be seen between 13th and 18th June indoors at STATION Berlin.

There is a lot to learn for possibilities and roles for photojournalists in the future from Geert van Kesteren. “Without knowing him, one suspects Geert van Kesteren to be the punk of photo- journalism… Instead of pushing back, he embraces new realities. We are glad to announce the presentation of the Black.Light Project, which will be included in the festival again as a part of this new platform, “Converge & Converse.”

For ten years Pedro Rosa Mendes (writer) and Wolf Böwig (photographer) traveled the region to document the West African wars. Their work has been recognized and published in newspapers and publications around the world. Under the label “The Charles Taylor Wars”, an international lineup of illustrators and artists now create a crossover version of the reports, merging illustration, photography and written word.

On Friday, June 14, Wolf Böwig will also take part in a panel about new media formats w/ Robert King, Rocco Castoro, and Micha Brunveils. He will talk about Black.Light Project and his new cross media approach. Berlin actor Alexander Radszun and Böwig already present the Black.Light Project in a multimedia performance on Friday, at 7pm.

A major part of Berlin Fotofestival 2013 is the transnational project “Open the shutters”, exploring the role of photography in historic and recent conflict situations in Europe and beyond. Together with Partners from Derry Northern Ireland (Nerve Center and City of Culture Company) and Dubrovnik, Croatia (War Photo LTD), festival organizer “Community Impulse Initiative e.V., has developed a multipart common exhibition “Beyond the Walls“, first on display at Berlin Fotofestival 2013 and then staged in different variations in Derry (NI) and Dubrovnik later in the year.

The Berlin version of “Beyond the Walls” comprises of a collection of images from the exhibition “Picturing Derry” , showing photography of “The Troubles” 1969 in Northern Ireland, the exhibition BROKEN LIGHTS of Yugoslavia, a photographic journey through the wars that broke the republics, broke the communities and broke the people of the former Yugoslavia by Emmanuel Ortiz and an indoor and outdoor exhibition of large scale panorama photos of Kai Wiedenhöfer`s WALL ON WALL project.

Furthermore “Open the Shutters” at Berlin Fotofestival presents a series of lectures, screenings and workshops by international conflict and documentary photographers (i.e. Kai Wiedenhöfer, Robert King, Geert van Kesteren, Rob Hornstra, Wolf Böwig) and media experts looking at various styles and means of communication and public impact of photography in situiations of societal conflict and war and discuss contemporary challenges of finding new ways of fulfilling their job in a time of financial cut backs for editorial photojournalism due to the rise of the internet and digital media conversion.

Funded with the support of the EU Culture program of the European Union.

One of the groundbreaking examples for “Good Practice” that can be seen at this years festival is the work of dutch photographer Rob Hornstra. Thus several of his projects will be on display - “Sotchi-Project“ as well as „101 Billionaires”. In an interdisciplinary workshop by Hornstra, the author Arnold van Bruggen and the designer Jeroen Kummer tshare their experiences and knowledge about long-term photojournalistic projects and how to organise, finance, and design them to tell a story in a special and creative way.

The Sochi Project is a five year long project that Rob Hornstra and the author and filmmaker Arnold van Bruggen started in 2009 and that will end in the autumn of 2014 just right before the Winter Olympics begin. The goal is to document the changes Sochi and the whole caucasian area go through during the preparation for the Olympics.

During the process of the project Hornstra and his companions produced numerous books, poster and exhibitions with different stories for diverse purposes and reasons. Each one of them is a unique work of art and worth seeing. In regard for the festivals purposes this total work of art and ways of presenting content represent a form of photojournalism that is one of a kind. Berlin Fotofestival THE BROWSE offers – months before the final exhibitions in Antwerp and Moscow – this extraoridnary work of dutch photojournalism an international platform and you the chance to look at it.
