The Sochi Project Unveiled
Rob Hornstra is currently finishing the 5-year documentary “The Sochi Project” with writer and filmmaker Arnold van Bruggen, and graphic designer Jeroen Kummer. The Sochi Project documents regional changes in the conflict ridden North Caucasus, preparing for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. The trio will give a one-day interdisciplinary workshop entitled, “The Sochi Project Unveiled.” In the workshop, they will discuss the background of and stories from the Sochi Project, while also negotiating the use of different presentation media and publication, financing and distribution strategies.
10.00 -11.30 Arnold van Bruggen
Arnold will introduce The Sochi Project to the audience. How did we get the idea, start our collaboration with a writer, photographer and designers, and last but not least why did we choose to do this? How did we pick the topics, regions, and how do we prepare our travels? How did the project turn out to be more documentary-style like then journalistic? Some essential do’s and dont’s for long-term documentary projects.

12.30 – 14.00 Rob Hornstra
In this timeframe Rob Hornstra will tell the basics about the organization and financing of the project. What are do’s and don’ts in crowdfunding? How do you survive as a documentary maker? attention for the outside world. How to deal with magazines and newspapers, exhibition spaces and publishers? The general view will be interspersed with examples of the most profitable and most loss-making chapters within The Sochi Project.
14.30 – 16.00 Jeroen Kummer
Jeroen will discuss the challenges of translating so many different storylines and shapes into unique concepts which have a completely different, custom-built appearance, but are all part of the same project in style and conceptualization.
